A qualified, experienced birding guide can help you see hundreds more species of birds than on your own. In addition to knowing how to find tropical bird species, he or she will also know where to find them. In general, a good birding guide will help you find the birds you hope to see and be honest about your chances of connecting with those target species (some are much harder to find than others).
The following two birding guides have years of experience in studying the birds of Costa Rica and showing them to many satisfied clients:
Randall Ortega Chaves: Randall Ortega Chaves: Randall is the owner of Costa Rica Bird Journeys and gives tours in at least four different languages. A serious birdwatcher since a young age, Randall is also a professional photographer and leads multi-day trips throughout the country as well as day trips in the Jaco/Carara area.
Patrick O’Donnell: Patrick has been studying birds throughout Costa Rica since 1992 and writes about them at his Costa Rica Living and Birding Blog. He records bird vocalizations, is a consultant to the scientific committee for the AOCR, and also guides birders on day and weekend trips that leave from the Central Valley.
