Fun, Free Things to Do In Costa Rica in 2014

By patrick on

It’s often been said that some of the best things in life are free. You may be reminded of this classic saying as soon as you step off the plane in Costa Rica to feel the warm, tropical air and notice the beautiful mountain scenery. In addition to enjoying beautiful surroundings at all times, there are other fun activities in Costa Rica that won’t cost you a penny.

While you will have to pay to go zip-lining, rafting, or hiring a guide (all very much worth paying for them), here are a few things you can do for free:

  • Birdwatching in Costa Rica– Of course we would say this first but it’s true. It doesn’t cost a thing to watch birds in hotel gardens or during hikes and looking at amazing birds like an Emerald Toucanet, Green Thorntail, or other stunning tropical birds helps you appreciate the biodiversity that is a big part of Costa Rica’s natural treasures. All you need is good binoculars, some patience, and a birding app for Costa Rica  to identify them.

You might see an Emerald Toucanet at the Colibri Cafe.

  • Hiking– Going on a hike is only going to cost something if you have to pay an entrance fee. It’s worth it to experience many of the national parks and private reserves.
  • A visit to the beach– Every beach in Costa Rica is free by law. In other words, no one is allowed to charge anyone any sort of entrance fee to go to the beach.
  • Experience local culture: It doesn’t cost a thing to go for a stroll in a local plaza, watch a tope (a sort of cowboy parade), or explore a market or two.

Green Thorntail- one of many stunning bird species that occur in Costa Rica.

Enjoy your visit Costa Rica!
