Panama might be best known for the canal but it also happens to be one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. For the visitor, this translates to excellent opportunities for watching exotic animals like monkeys, sloths, toucans, parrots, and other beautiful birds. There are beautiful birds to see just about everywhere you go in Panama, even in the parks of Panama City.
One of the common parrot species is the Red-lored. Since this fairly large parrot thrives in areas with patchy forest and farmlands, it can be seen in many parts of Panama.
Another common parrot is the Blue-headed. Watch for this beautiful bird in low elevations throughout the country.
Toucans can also be seen in some areas. The stunning Keel-billed Toucan is fairly common in Metropolitan Park, near the canal, and many other places in the country.
Many species of hummingbirds are also frequently seen including the striking White-necked Jacobin,
and the Snowy-bellied Hummingbird.
As far as small birds go, beautiful tanagers are also a common sight. Look for species like the Blue-gray, Golden-hooded, Crimson-backed, and Flame-rumped in gardens and forest edge.
