Some answers to some FAQs about the images used in the app:
- Are all of the pictures from Costa Rica?– 99% were taken in Costa Rica. There might be one or two images from Panama and I know that the Orchard Oriole was taken in central Illinois.
- Who did the photography for the app?– Randall Ortega Chaves did most of the photography and Pat O’Donnell also added images for species and images listed at the end of this post.
- Why do some images look better than others?– Bird photography in the humid, tropical forests of Costa Rica is a serious challenge and photographers are typically confronted with dark conditions, dense vegetation, and backlit birds way up in the canopy. This translates to difficulties in getting images of certain species. To make sure that the app included as many common and signature Costa Rican species as possible, and because it may take months to get high quality images of certain species, we decided to publish the app now with suitable images that were available. Every image can be used for identification purposes and the app will be periodically updated with higher quality images and more species.
